Dental Extractions
Teeth extraction is not a pleasant thought. Getting the bad news that a tooth has to be extracted can cause anxiety for patients. At Grove City Dental, we don’t like pulling teeth either. We want you to retain as many of your natural teeth as possible. There are, however, situations where a dental extraction is necessary to maintain your oral health and beautiful smile.
The most common reason for dental extractions is usually teeth that are too badly damaged to be repaired. However, some of the other common reasons include:
- A crowded mouth - Sometimes your mouth isn’t big enough to accommodate all your teeth. Teeth that are overcrowded can become crooked and misaligned. If you already have crooked teeth you may need them extracted to prepare your mouth for orthodontic work.
- Wisdom teeth - Most people get their wisdom teeth pulled because of the possibility of teeth overcrowding. This can help prevent pain and infection that might occur as a result of crowded wisdom teeth that don’t have any room to grow.
- Decay or damage - If there is a tooth that has decay or damage in its pulp (the middle of the tooth where the nerves and blood vessels are), it is extracted to prevent the tooth and surrounding teeth from getting infected.
- Risk of infection - Patients with severely compromised immune systems may get teeth extracted to eliminate the possibility of infection as their bodies won’t be able to fight back. Teeth that are damaged at the pulp will be extracted.
- Periodontal (Gum) Disease - Patients who have periodontal (or gum) disease may have teeth extracted because they get loose from the damage and weakening that occurs from the periodontal disease.
Some dental procedures may require an extraction. This occurs for such procedures as bridges, implants and dentures.
At Grove City Dental, we’ll let do a careful examination of your teeth, gums and mouth and determine if a dental extraction will benefit your health and smile. The longer patients wait to have their teeth extracted, the worse the damage can get. Set up an appointment with us today.
